Financial
support
Teaching
assistantships and fellowships are available for students with undergraduate backgrounds
in philosophy. The stipend is $10,000 per year. With optional summer teaching
(one to two courses), the stipend can be as high as $15,000 (provided summer funding
is available). It includes a waiver of out-of-state or nonresident tuition (i.e.,
the student pays at the instate or Texas resident rate instead) plus faculty/staff
health insurance for the employed student at no cost and the option of buying
insurance for dependents. Applications are due by February 1 each year. Two letters
of recommendation are required. A sample of the student's writing is optional,
but encouraged. The
Richardson Environmental Action League (R.E.A.L.) awards a $500 fellowship each
fall and spring semester to a second-year student. One
to two graduate supports of $1,000 are awarded each year. These supports include
a waiver of out-of-state or nonresident tuition for recipients who are international
students or students from other states within the United States. They can be awarded
to first or second year students. Supports awarded in the first year can be renewed
for a second year. Because
the Concentration in Environmental Ethics is considered a unique program within
the Academic Common Market, students in fourteen southern states are eligible
to apply for waivers of out-of-state tuition. Although
there are no scholarships specifically for philosophy graduate students, they
are eligible to apply for scholarships.
